Every business or brand wants customers that are raving fans and social ambassadors. Some brands create their own social ambassador campaigns by enlisting bloggers or customers with a strong voice. The best social ambassadors are the average customers that sincerely love the product and/or service and willing to share their experience.

Become a social ambassador

Are you the type of person that likes to shout from the roof tops when you find a great product or service? Are you an influencer in your family and community? Do you enjoy blogging, tweeting, posting updates to Facebook or LinkedIn? Are you using the latest social platform, Pinterest? If so, then you can easily become a social ambassador.

Personally, I LOVE to share videos. Not necessarily videos of myself but videos where I am behind the camera sharing a great experience.

Squeeky Clean Service

While at work a few months ago the local Fish Window Cleaning franchise team were working diligently cleaning the second floor windows of our office building. I took notice of their lack of fear of heights and the care they took to get my windows squeaky clean. Personally, I would never venture that high up and I hate cleaning windows! I took the video below and shared on their Facebook page, Tweeted and sent a word of thanks to their corporate team. It took all of 10 minutes of my time to share my great experience and become a Fish Window Cleaning (franchise) social ambassador.  I received a note of thanks for the postings and exchanged emails and tweets with the Fish team.

A little Tasti Love

Another passion is networking and meeting new people in the franchise industry. Last week I had the pleasure meeting Tammy Friedeck at the Houston Social Media Club TweetUp hosted by Michele Price aka @prosperitygal. Tammy recently relocated to Houston to serve as the Communications Coordinator for the Mattress Firm. Tammy and I met for lunch a few days later and I was able to introduce her to Tasti D-lite. I asked if I could film her very first bite and if she didn’t like it, I wouldn’t publish. As you will see below, she did enjoy it and of course the video was Tweeted and posted to the various platforms.   We don’t expect the video to go viral but it does demonstrate how we are social ambassadors for Tasti. Our tweets were re-tweeted by @tastidlite and we received a note of thanks from the Tasti team.

Don’t be that company!

Earlier this month, I attended a wedding of one of my son’s best friends. It was superb! The decorations were beautiful. The food was outrageously delicious. The music was fun and I witnessed my grandson experience “getting down” on the dance floor. At 21 months the kid has some moves! The day after the wedding I sent an email to the wedding coordinator and copied the management team. I thanked them for a job well done and congratulated them on the event.

My next move would have been to post glowing remarks to their Facebook page or maybe blog about the facility. I did not. Why? I never received a response to my email. I know for a fact the email was received by all the recipients and was shared with co-workers. How difficult would it have been to reply to me?

Engaging with customers who could potentially do damage AND could be social ambassadors should be a priority.

Are you a social ambassador? What have your shared recently? I would love to know!

Promotion alert: Attend FranCamp in Atlanta and meet Fish Window Cleaning and Tasti D-lite. They will share their expertise on local marketing and building social ambassadors!

Early in May my friends at tasti D-lite started a  contest to win a CMA music festival package. Since I love social media contests/challenges I asked Lorri Wyndham if she wanted to participate with me.

Our video entry is below.  Our goal was to have fun and help promote the contest. We also love to challenge our corporate video producer, Bryan Kersten. Bryan did the best he could with our lack of talent. Lorri and I had a great time participating but we are not at all surprised we didn’t win!

We congratulate the actual winner of the tasti D-lite contest, Kim Ingle from Indiana. You can find the winning entry on the Tasti Facebook page or here: http://www.tastidlite.com/

Social Geek Radio

We all know social media is  about engagement. Like most of you I started using social media several years ago with LinkedIn. I securely held the position of President of COMPUTER EXPLORERS so I didn’t establish an account to search for a job. My goal was to develop relationships with peers in the franchise industry and help to build brand awareness of COMPUTER EXPLORERS. I wanted to leverage relationships with people I had worked with previously, friends, former customers and of course to build new connections.

In December 2008 I was convinced that I needed to join Twitter and spend time listening and learning. I listened until March 2009 and started tweeting like a fiend. By the end of the month I had 62 followers. According to http://www.twitterholic.com I had 922 followers by August 2009. Once again my goal was to make new connections and leverage relationships.

It was natural for my next steps to develop a Facebook page, Flickr, Digg and Delicious accounts and then of course start blogging!

Over the last year I have been fortunate to appear on The Franchise Show with Jeff D’Arcy and again with Rieva. I did an interview on The Business Makers Show with Esther Steinfeld and most recently did a BlogTalkRadio show with host Paul Segreto.

Just when I thought I couldn’t add another tool to my social media strategy I’ve decide it’s time to co-host a new online radio show, Social Geek Radio! BlogTalkRadio is a social network application allowing people to easily host their own online radio show. I’m honored that my co-host will be BJ Emerson, Social Technology Officer for Tasti D-Lite.

Our first episode is scheduled for Thursday May 13th 6pm PT/8pm CT/9pm ET. You can find more information on www.socialgeekradio.com or www.blogtalkradio.com/socialgeekradio. BJ and I plan to share our tips on social media and at the end of each show BJ will share “When in Doubt Geek it Out!”

We hope you can join us!

Nikki Sells, Vice President Franchise Development Tasti D-Lite walked into the Marriott RiverCenter after attending a Super Bowl Sunday event and stopped to take the photo above. When Nikki walked over to say hello we were buried in our blackberry, iPhone or Droid texting, posting messages on Facebook and of course tweeting while watching the game. Nikki said “you look like the geeks in high school at the back of the classroom!” The big smiles on our face show we were not the least insulted by the comment.

We were attending the 50th anniversary convention for the International Franchise Association (IFA). Together we attended many sessions. No surprise that our interest was sessions on social technology. The IFA  Information Technology Committee chaired by Jerrod Sessler and Ken Colburn obviously worked hard on content and speakers. The sessions were well attended and received positive evaluations.

Internet and Technology Entrepreneur Scott Klososky opened the Technology Summit with a bang and then closed the convention sharing the newest trends for leveraging technology to build a franchise system. There were several panel presentations. I was honored to speak with Philip St. Jacques, Managing Partner, GMLV/St. Jacques Franchise Brand Marketing,  Grant Kreutzer, Franchise Recruiting Director for Jack in the Box and Bill Zinke, Chief Marketing Officer, Tasti D-Lite.

Fred and Fun Stuff Guy

The session “Using Social Media to Build Your Brand & Grow Your Business” received attention from Subway CEO Fred DeLuca. After the session Fred walked up to panel speakers Ken Colburn, CEO The Data Doctors and BJ Emerson, Director of Information and Social Technologies for Tasti D-Lite (also known as fun stuff guy) and asked if they would spend some time explaining Twitter. After a few short hours @FredSubwayCEO was tweeting feverishly!

Attending the IFA annual convention offers a tremendous opportunity to connect with other franchise executives! It is the most comprehensive franchising event with interactive roundtable sessions, educational sessions and influential franchise leader panel presentations. Great food (Taste of Franchising), a world of franchise innovation (Exhibit Hall) and priceless networking opportunities should not be missed by anyone in the franchise industry.
Mark your calendar – February 13-16th, MGM Grand Hotel Las Vegas, NV for the 2011 convention. You won’t want to miss it!
